Introduction

The Economics Explorer is an annual, online national competition in Malaysia for primary, secondary and pre-university students. It introduces key concepts in economics, entrepreneurship, financial literacy and business. Through multiple-choice questions, students apply their knowledge to real-world economic and financial situations, both locally and globally. The competition is designed by experts to build understanding, critical thinking and interest in economics, with the following objectives:

  • To develop students’ potential in economics and financial literacy.

  • To raise awareness of the importance of financial literacy in daily life.

  • To provide opportunities for students to apply economic and financial knowledge in real-world contexts.

  • To strengthen higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) for future challenges.

  • To encourage the practical use of economic knowledge to address real-world and national issues.

The Four Stages

The Economics Explorer Competition programme in Malaysia comprises four stages:

  1. Top 10%

    Malaysian Economics Olympiad (MyEO)

    • The top 10% from the secondary category (13 – 19 years old)
    • Paper-based exam (offline)
  2. 15–20

    National Selection Camp

    • The top 15 to 20 students from MyEO
    • Online camp
    • Final test
  3. 5

    National Training Camp

    • The best 5 students from selection camp
    • Physical camp
  4. 5

    International Economics Olympiad (IEO)

    • The best 5 students

Every participant will receive a certificate of participation. Awards will be given to the top scorers according to the percentages shown below. The awards are symbolic and not actual medals.
